Staff Spotlight: Shannon Mangram - Staff Attorney
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in legal immigration assistance?
I have always been inspired by the stories and sacrifices of the immigrant community. Besides those affected in my life, I have been saddened by the recent rhetoric and actions taken by governmental officials and I wanted to help.
2. What challenges do immigrants and refugees commonly face when seeking legal assistance, and how do you help them overcome these obstacles?
In my experience, it is navigating the complexity of the system. It is my job to take that burden of complexity off their shoulders and guide them through to the best possible outcome.
3. How has your background and personal journey influenced your approach to working with immigrants and refugees?
Growing up in a sanctuary city introduced me to refugee populations early in my life and instilled a value of seeing immigrants as my neighbors, both literally and figuratively. So much so, that I received my Bachelor's degree in Global Studies and have lived abroad myself. This has fostered a deep concern for human rights, equality, and justice. In addition to my legal expertise, I have spent over a decade refining my cultural competence skills and have an LLC where I assist others in developing their soft skills, including intercultural competence. I agree wholeheartedly in CLIA's mission: "We are all neighbors. We are all Nebraskans."
4. What advice would you give to immigrants and refugees who are navigating the legal system for the first time?
Be patient as possible. Policy changes frequently and the wait times are out of the control of legal representatives. If you are able to anticipate challenges, you can better navigate a potentially extensive waiting process.
5. What are your hopes and aspirations for the future of immigration policies and support systems in our country?
My hope is that immigration policy adjudicates both efficiently and accurately, that the backlog becomes a national priority, and that all those who seek the refuge and promise of the United States are able to find it.
