Center For Legal Immigration Assistance Response to Proposed ICE Detention Facility (‘Cornhusker Clink’) in Nebraska
For Immediate Release
August 20, 2025
Lincoln, NE - Governor Jim Pillen’s decision is a direct attack on our values and communities. The recent announcement to transform McCook’s Work Ethic Camp into an ICE detention facility is part of a state effort to help Trump’s enforcement expansion. This is not what represents Nebraskans, and we strongly oppose the cruelty of policies designed to tear families apart and push uncertainty on our active communities.
This aggressive expansion of enforcement also includes the Nebraska State Patrol's intent to sign a 287(g) agreement, which would empower state troopers to make immigration arrests outside of a jail setting. Additionally, about 20 Nebraska National Guard soldiers are being deployed to provide administrative, clerical, and logistical support to ICE officials. We are deeply concerned with the increase in enforcement and lack of transparency regarding details from the Governor's office. This will only further community fears and create an environment of distrust and division.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Governor Pillen also use dangerous rhetoric to describe immigrants as "criminal, illegal aliens" or "the worst of the worst." However we know that is far from reality as these are our neighbors, friends, business owners, educators, and even family members. This policy change does NOT “keep Nebraskans safe,” as claimed by Pillen, because it does not include all Nebraskans. Everyone, no matter their immigration status, has rights and deserves to live a good life.
At CLIA we are fully committed to supporting immigrants impacted by this alarming news. We will continue to provide comprehensive and free legal services to clients and their families, making sure they know their rights and receive legal counsel. We are prepared to fight against these policies that threaten valuable members of our community and will continue to monitor any policy changes and updates from Governor Pillen.
